Water Walkers: Discerning The Call
Matthew 14:28-29
1. Water-walking requires not only
the courage to take a risk, but also the wisdom to
discerna call.
2. Peter does not immediately jump out
of the boat.
3. Peter is not in charge of
water-walking, Jesus is.
4. It is interesting to note that in most
self-help books, risk-taking is highly praised.
5. Jesus is not looking for impulse ridden
Type Ts. He is looking for Type W, or water-walker
personality.
I. Calling: A Reflection of Gods

A. God is
particularly active in working with people.
B. It is using one's
endowed giftedness to serve the world with excellence and throught
that service, to love and honor God.
C. You have a
calling, but callings are not always easy to hear.
II. Taking your Calling
Seriously.
A. You are not a
spare part. You have a purpose.
B. The place to
begiin is by taking your calling with the right kind of
seriousness.
III. Honoring your Raw
Material.
A. Discerning God's
calling will take many attempts and failures.
B. A calling is
something you discover not something you choose.
C. You and I are the
call-ees and God is the Call-er.
D. Giftedness is
about more than just talents, it includes passion.
E. A calling doesn't
always bring feelings of enjoyment.
F. An enormous part
of following our calliing is not so much choosing as it is
listening.
G. It is very
important to distinguish what I love doing for its own sake
from what I may want to do because of the rewards it may bring
me.
H. When I do not honor my
raw material, reality becomes my enemy.
I. If I have the
courage to acknowledge my limits and embrace them, I can
experience enormous freedom.
